The Thinking Plant’s Man | Jagadish Chandra Bose (1858-1937)

Jagadish Chandra Bose, an Indian scientist who, in the early 20th century, argued that plants are far more active and responsive than scientists of his time believed. Bose used custom-built instruments to measure electrical signals and movements in plants, likening them to animal-like responses and even referring to plant “nervous systems.” His dramatic demonstrations — such as showing a plant’s “heartbeat” and reactions to stimulants and depressants — challenged the prevailing view that plants were passive automata.
